About our Eye Examination
At D&D McWilliams we offer a comprehensive and professional eye test.
You will be welcomed by either David or Laura who are our fully qualified Optometrists. Upon booking an appointment you have a choice as to who you would like to see and many of our patients see the same optician every time for that continuity of care.
Our typical eye examination is half-an-hour long in a relaxed and non-pressured environment. Using a mixture of traditional techniques and modern eye care technology our Optometrists will thoroughly assess your quality of vision, perform a comprehensive check of your eye health including Retinal Photography and will come to an honest and personal recommendation of what is best for you.
Both David and Laura pay particular attention to our patient’s health and eye comfort and often can advise simple lifestyle and dietary changes to get the most out of your vision.
We advise that all adults have an eye examination every two years, unless advised more regularly by their Optometrist.
We often recommend an examination every year for many of our patients over 70, with glaucoma or macular degeneration or with a family history of those conditions, with diabetes or with certain other eye or general health conditions.
We welcome children of all ages as it is not necessary for them to be able to read to conduct the eye test. Many eye conditions can be picked up at an early age and corrected as the eyes are still developing. All children are entitled to a free NHS examination until 16 years old, or under 19 if in full-time education.

Retinal Photography allows our Optometrists to take a high-definition image of the retina. This image is then studied and examined and is included as part of our eye examination.
Retinal Photography allows us to:
- Pick out small irregularities and identify eye health problems at a much earlier stage.
- The images are stored and we compare them at each visit, allowing us to be as thorough with your health as we can.
- The eye is the only part of the body where internal blood vessels can be seen, allowing our Optometrists to spot potential issues relating to blood pressure, diabetes and other non-eye related conditions.
- Our high-definition retinal camera is suitable for the vast majority of patients and often does not require the use of eye drops.
Specialist Eyecare Services
We can carry out Diabetic Retinopathy Screening in our practices including Retinal Photography and this can include sending a report to your doctor if required.
Dry Eye Management
The good news is that there are a range of treatments to help relieve these discomforts. Controlling and managing dry eye is a particular area of interest to our Optometrists and we have a wide range of drops and sprays to help. Studies have shown that high-EPA Fish Oils or flax-seed oil supplements can also be of benefit. We stock the Lamberts range of supplements that are known for their high EPA content that far exceed most supermarket stocked products.
Macular Degeneration Supplements
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition which usually affects people in later life and is the leading cause of blindness in the UK. Gradual damage to the retina causes a loss of vision in the centre of the visual field (the macula) - the part of the eye we use for seeing fine detail.
While there are no cures for this degenerative condition our Optometrists can advise on how best to preserve your vision and we stock visual aids that can improve tasks such as reading.
Studies have shown that certain nutrients can help slow this condition, particularly Lutein and Zeaxanthin. We stock supplements specifically for Macular Degeneration with high concentrations of these nutrients. Come along and see us for more details.
At D&D McWilliams we offer both NHS and Private home eye examinations for those housebound or unable to make it to one of our practices.
Home Visits can often be arranged on Saturday Afternoons or on certain weekdays by appointment. If new spectacles are required we can bring a selection of frames for you to choose from and arrange a return visit for them to be fitted when they are ready.
